We are reproducing the petition\u00a0produced by the students of HCU calling for support for the agitation. We request others to sign the petition and share it widely.<\/p>\n

Dear Dr. Rangarajan,<\/p>\n

We have learnt with dismay about the attack by the police on students at the University of\u00a0Hyderabad on 22 March, 2016. We understand that there may have been acts of destruction\u00a0by some of the students, and we strongly condemn such acts. It is arguable whether it wasnecessary to call the police to deal with the students. However, having called the police, the\u00a0administration of the University should have ensured that the police force did not make a brutal\u00a0assault on the students. The Vice Chancellor and the administration of the University failed in\u00a0this respect, as the ensuing heavy-handed police action proves. We strongly condemn the attack<\/p>\n

by the police, and the failure of the administration of the University to prevent it.<\/p>\n

We would like to make the following points about the immediate repercussions of the events<\/p>\n

of the 22nd:<\/p>\n

1. Several students and two members of the faculty of the University have been detained by\u00a0the police. We request you, and the administration of the University, to take every possible\u00a0measure to secure their release, and to get them back to the University at the earliest.<\/p>\n

2. Some students were injured in the police action, and have been receiving medical treatment\u00a0at the University\u2019s Health Centre, and in private clinics and hospitals. We urge that all\u00a0available help be extended to these students, and we request you to ensure their well-being.<\/p>\n

3. We understand that some students who have been protesting are worried about their\u00a0future in the university, and fear retribution from the administration. It is imperative that\u00a0their fears be assuaged, and that students are not penalised for legitimately voicing their\u00a0political opinions, or for challenging the University establishment.<\/p>\n

4. There was no food or water in the student hostels, and the connection between the University campus to the Internet was closed down, for two days after the 22nd. This is a form\u00a0of collective punishment. We condemn it, and ask the administration of the University to\u00a0see that such acts of punishment do not recur.<\/p>\n

We have the following points to make in the general context of the stormy events at the\u00a0University:<\/p>\n

1. The direct cause of the events on the 22nd was the resumption of office by P. Appa Rao, the\u00a0Vice Chancellor of the University. A judicial enquiry has been initiated by the Ministryof Human Resource Development, Government of India, into the events around Rohith\u00a0Vemula\u2019s suicide, and Prof. Appa Rao is one of the central figures in those events. There\u00a0is a case against him under the SC\/ST Atrocities Act, and another under the laws relating\u00a0to abetting a suicide. In these circumstances, it is utterly inappropriate for him to occupy\u00a0the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University, and we demand that he relinquish that\u00a0office forthwith.<\/p>\n

2. There has been almost no progress in the police cases against Prof. Appa Rao, whereas the\u00a0police have been quick to act on the protesting students. We demand that this imbalance\u00a0be redressed, and that the cases against Prof. Appa Rao be speedily brought to their logical\u00a0conclusion.<\/p>\n

3. The protest by the students on the 22nd grew out of the events that led to Mr. Vemula\u2019s\u00a0suicide. Issues of systematic injustice against Dalits, and of attempts by certain groups of\u00a0students of the University to disrupt the activities of students whose opinions they oppose,\u00a0have repeatedly surfaced in the discourse following Mr. Vemula\u2019s suicide. We ask the\u00a0administration of the University to seriously address these issues.<\/p>\n

4. A troubling feature of the events at the University is the frequent reliance of the administration of the University on the police apparatus. We feel that the police have no place in\u00a0an academic campus, and should be called upon only in rare circumstances. We, therefore,\u00a0request you to have the police removed from the campus of the University.<\/p>\n

The University of Hyderabad is one of the important educational centres of the country.<\/p>\n

For that reason, we hope that you, and the administration of the University, will do every-
\nthing to provide the students of the University the freedom, and the consideration, that are a\u00a0distinguishing feature of a great academic institution.<\/p>\n

Dear Dr. Rangarajan,<\/p>\n

We have learnt with dismay about the attack by the police on students at the University of<\/p>\n

Hyderabad on 22 March, 2016. We understand that there may have been acts of destruction<\/p>\n

by some of the students, and we strongly condemn such acts. It is arguable whether it was<\/p>\n

necessary to call the police to deal with the students. However, having called the police, the<\/p>\n

administration of the University should have ensured that the police force did not make a brutal<\/p>\n

assault on the students. The Vice Chancellor and the administration of the University failed in<\/p>\n

this respect, as the ensuing heavy-handed police action proves. We strongly condemn the attack<\/p>\n

by the police, and the failure of the administration of the University to prevent it.<\/p>\n

We would like to make the following points about the immediate repercussions of the events<\/p>\n

of the 22nd:<\/p>\n

1. Several students and two members of the faculty of the University have been detained by<\/p>\n

the police. We request you, and the administration of the University, to take every possible<\/p>\n

measure to secure their release, and to get them back to the University at the earliest.<\/p>\n

2. Some students were injured in the police action, and have been receiving medical treatment<\/p>\n

at the University\u2019s Health Centre, and in private clinics and hospitals. We urge that all<\/p>\n

available help be extended to these students, and we request you to ensure their well-being.<\/p>\n

3. We understand that some students who have been protesting are worried about their<\/p>\n

future in the university, and fear retribution from the administration. It is imperative that<\/p>\n

their fears be assuaged, and that students are not penalised for legitimately voicing their<\/p>\n

political opinions, or for challenging the University establishment.<\/p>\n

4. There was no food or water in the student hostels, and the connection between the Univer- sity campus to the Internet was closed down, for two days after the 22nd. This is a form<\/p>\n

of collective punishment. We condemn it, and ask the administration of the University to<\/p>\n

see that such acts of punishment do not recur.<\/p>\n

We have the following points to make in the general context of the stormy events at the<\/p>\n

University:<\/p>\n

1. The direct cause of the events on the 22nd was the resumption of office by P. Appa Rao, the<\/p>\n

Vice Chancellor of the University. A judicial enquiry has been initiated by the Ministry<\/p>\n

of Human Resource Development, Government of India, into the events around Rohith<\/p>\n

Vemula\u2019s suicide, and Prof. Appa Rao is one of the central figures in those events. There<\/p>\n

is a case against him under the SC\/ST Atrocities Act, and another under the laws relating<\/p>\n

to abetting a suicide. In these circumstances, it is utterly inappropriate for him to occupy<\/p>\n

the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University, and we demand that he relinquish that<\/p>\n

office forthwith.<\/p>\n

2. There has been almost no progress in the police cases against Prof. Appa Rao, whereas the<\/p>\n

police have been quick to act on the protesting students. We demand that this imbalance<\/p>\n

be redressed, and that the cases against Prof. Appa Rao be speedily brought to their logical<\/p>\n

conclusion.<\/p>\n

3. The protest by the students on the 22nd grew out of the events that led to Mr. Vemula\u2019s<\/p>\n

suicide. Issues of systematic injustice against Dalits, and of attempts by certain groups of<\/p>\n

students of the University to disrupt the activities of students whose opinions they oppose,<\/p>\n

have repeatedly surfaced in the discourse following Mr. Vemula\u2019s suicide. We ask the<\/p>\n

administration of the University to seriously address these issues.<\/p>\n

4. A troubling feature of the events at the University is the frequent reliance of the adminis- tration of the University on the police apparatus. We feel that the police have no place in<\/p>\n

an academic campus, and should be called upon only in rare circumstances. We, therefore,<\/p>\n

request you to have the police removed from the campus of the University.<\/p>\n

The University of Hyderabad is one of the important educational centres of the country.<\/p>\n

For that reason, we hope that you, and the administration of the University, will do every- thing to provide the students of the University the freedom, and the consideration, that are a<\/p>\n

distinguishing feature of a great academic institution.<\/p>\n
